Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Good Health

Author: Robert C Atkins

Millions of followers already know that the Atkins Diet really works... and new, important studies from leading universities agree. Where, in the past, the Atkins Diet has been the center of medical controversy, it has now been medically proven that the Atkins way is not only delicious, it's a safe and effective plan for shedding pounds for good. Followers are hungry for more information on how to stay on Atkins -- and that's what this book delivers, with:

  • 200 menu plans and 125 recipes
  • Special holiday meals and fantastic ethnic cuisines
  • Before-and-after photos and inspiring success stories -- with time-tested tips from those who've been there and won their battle with weight
  • Self-tests to help readers meet and stay with their goals

Publishers Weekly

Atkins, cardiologist and founder of the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine in New York City, has advocated his high protein/low carb diet regimen for some 30 years (Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution was published in 1972, and Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution in 1992). While fans of the butter-eggs-steak diet have long supported the Atkins program as a way of life, until this past year, the medical community has not warmly endorsed the plan. However, recent students show that the Atkins plan has enabled dieters to both lose and maintain their weight loss as well as reduce their cholesterol levels. This book, which can be used by people familiar with the Atkins plan as well as those who have not followed it, offers detailed questionnaires designed to help readers understand the preferred food choices. Particularly helpful are the charts of "eat regularly," "eat in moderation" and "eat sparingly." Some of the inclusions may surprise readers but Atkins offers explanations of which foods fall into the "higher carb" categories (potatoes, bananas, rice cakes) and therefore must be limited. First-person success stories are sprinkled throughout the book. The second half of the book includes a month's worth of meal plans, holiday menus, and 125 recipes for a variety of foods, including jerk shrimp, potato salad, brown rice pilaf, zucchini latkes, rhubarb applesauce and chocolate souffle. While this diet won't work for everyone, especially vegetarians, this guide is a comprehensive overview for dieters who are ready to embrace the Atkins philosophy. (Mar.) Forecast: With national print and broadcast advertising along with a TV/radio satellite tour, this book is sure to hit bestseller lists and re-ignite discussion over the continued increase in the number of overweight Americans and the safety and effectiveness of different diets. Making an Exit or Instant Beauty

Making an Exit: A Mother-Daughter Drama with Alzheimer's, Machine Tools, and Laughter

Author: Elinor Fuchs

Written with “humanity, compassion, and dignity,” an unexpected love story of a career-driven mother, a once-resentful daughter, and a ten-year battle with Alzheimer's (Los Angeles Times)

At a time when such things were rare, Elinor Fuchs's mother, Lil, escaped a miserable marriage and left young Elinor to be raised by grandparents as she traveled the world selling automotive parts and military gear. With her stunning looks and ambition, Lil was less a mother to love than a figure to admire—and, once in college, Elinor determined to keep her distance.
Making an Exit is the moving account of what happens afterward, following Lil's diagnosis with Alzheimer's. As the disease progresses, both women are transformed: Elinor, with growing compassion, becomes her mother's mother; Lil, regularly speaking of “love,” connects with her daughter as never before through the poetry of her disintegrating language.
With wit, wisdom, and theatrical flair, Making an Exit tells an uncommon story of a parent's decline—and a rekindled relationship. “The last ten years,” writes Fuchs, “they were our best.”

“How these women touched me! Driven and real, Making an Exit hurtles toward its truths with uncommon feeling and
honesty.” —Gish Jen, author of The Love Wife

“Tremendous . . . brilliant . . . filled with unexpected glimmers of hope, wisdom, and joy.” —The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Accepting Ourselves and Others or Parkinsons Disease

Accepting Ourselves and Others: A Journey into Recovery from Addictive and Compulsive Behavior for Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals

Author: Sheppard B Kominars

An estimated 10 million addicts and alcoholics in the U. S. are homosexual or bisexual. In fact, the rate of substance addiction rises from one in ten in the general community to perhaps as many as one in three in the gay community.

Accepting Ourselves, first published in 1989, was the first book to address the problems and needs of substance abusers in the homosexual community. Now, in this fully revised and expanded second edition which includes a workbook format, Accepting Ourselves and Others examines the issue of recovery as it affects the homosexual and bisexual communities of the nineties, as well as their friends, family, and therapists. The authors address the relationship between substance abuse and being a sexual minority both within and outside of traditional Twelve Step models. They also offer new research on the relationship of HIV and AIDS to substance abuse in the gay community, as well as the relationship to other issues such as anxiety, depression, sexual abuse and learning disabilities.

A special section developed for therapists assists the professional in working with gay clients suffering from addictive/compulsive behavior by addressing the impact issues such as abstinence, relapse, homophobia, and the prevailing denial of the magnitude compulsive behaviors have on this community. The Kominars offer a road map to those in the gay community searching to understand themselves and their addictive/compulsive behavior, providing invaluable help in maintaining long-term recovery.

This book is the first full, in-depth exploration of recovery for gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, and for counselors, therapists, clinicians, and clergywho work with them. Accepting Ourselves and Others is a dynamic, frank primer that gets right at the heart of issues that recovering gay, lesbian, and bisexual people face.

The authors offer more in-depth information about the book at sibyllineofbooks. com/acceptingourselves. html.

• Other approaches to treating the symptoms of Parkinson's

• Juvenile-onset Parkinson's disease

• Normal pressure hydrocephalus

• The effects of fluctuating hormones on disease symptoms

• Fetal cell transplants and porcine cell transplants

• The nutritional supplement Co-Enzyme Q10

William C. Koller

There is a definite need for this timely book. It is one of the best I have seen for people with Parkinson's disease and for their families.

Publishers Weekly

As a result of actor Michael J. Fox's disclosure that he has Parkinson's disease, public discussion about both the symptoms and treatment of this illness has heightened. This attention is important, according to these authors, all specialists in the treatment of Parkinson's and other neurological disorders, because it is a progressive, chronic disease whose symptoms including trembling, uneasy gait and loss of dexterity mimic those of other diseases, which can often lead to misdiagnosis. One of the most frustrating aspects of Parkinson's is that it manifests itself differently in each of its victims, which makes coping with this disease particularly challenging. Nonetheless, what is most important, aver the authors, is that both Parkinson's patients and their families have access to the most up-to-date treatment including new drugs, surgery and other therapies (diet, speech therapy, acupuncture), and with compassionate, clear writing, they provide an excellent overview. Leaving no stone unturned, Weiner, Shulman and Lang also advise patients about less clinical but equally important matters such as dealing with health insurance companies and informing employers. Particularly useful for readers are the Q&A section and a comprehensive resource directory. Obtaining an accurate diagnosis is the first step, after which patients and their loved ones will find this practical guide the perfect complement to a physician's care. Illus. Reviewer: Daniel B. Hier, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is a compact well-written introduction to Parkinson's disease written for patients and their families.
Purpose: The authors have set out to provide patients with a useful guide to Parkinson's disease.
Audience: It is aimed at patient with Parkinson's disease and their families.
Features: Using a question and answer format, the authors have created a general market book that addresses many important issues related to Parkinson's disease including diagnosis, treatment, and disease complications.
Assessment: This is a useful book for patients with Parkinson's disease and their families. It is written in a clear fashion by experts in the field. Although technical terms are used, they are carefully defined and explained. The book is quite readable. Physicians taking care of Parkinson's disease patients can recommend this book to their patients with confidence.

Library Journal

Parkinson's disease affects over one million Americans and has recently has received notoriety thanks to actor Michael J. Fox's diagnosis. Weiner, director of Maryland Parkinson's Disease Center, presents known facts and clarification about this degenerative neurological disease. Physical, behavioral, and psychiatric signs and symptoms exhibited during mild, moderate, and advanced stages of the disease are examined, as are diseases that can mimic Parkinson's. The author emphasizes the questions patients should ask and the tests they should undergo before a diagnosis is made, and he outlines drug and surgical treatments, including alternative and complementary therapies. Somewhat clinical in tone, this title is more comprehensive than the American College of Physicians' Parkinson's Disease (DK, 2000), but it is not as effective as Caring for the Parkinson Patient, 2d ed., edited by J. Thomas Hutton and Raye Lynne Dippel (Prometheus, 1999), in providing information on daily coping skills and psychological adjustment to the disease. Still, the guide is excellent for its current medical and research information for the newly diagnosed. Janet M. Schneider, James A. The Garden of Fertility or The Virus and the Vaccine

The Garden of Fertility: A Guide to Understanding Your Fertility Cycles to Take Control of Your Reproductive Health

Author: Katie Singer

The Garden of Fertility is a guide to using fertility awareness-that is, reading fertility signals in order to prevent or achieve pregnancy. Certified fertility educator Katie Singer explains how to observe and chart fertility cycles to determine when a woman is most fertile to increase chances of conception, or to exercise birth control naturally-a method that, when followed precisely, is as effective as the Pill. Unlike other books on fertility awareness, The Garden of Fertility also describes how to use the charts to gauge gynecological health and offers nonmedical options for strengthening reproductive wellness. This book provides all the information women never learned in sex education class, but should have.

The Virus and the Vaccine

Author: Debbie Bookchin

Jonas Salk's polio vaccine is regarded as a veritbale medical miracle, for it largely eradicated one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century. But the story of the vaccine has a dark side, one that has never been fully told before. Between 1954 and 1963, close to 98 million Americans received polio vaccinations contaminated with a carcinogenic monkey virus, now known as SV40. The government downplayed the incident, and it was generally accepted that although oncogenic to lab animals, SV40 was harmless to humans. But now SV40 is showing up in human cancers, and prominent researchers are demanding a serious public health response to this forgotten polio vaccine contaminant. A gripping medical detective story, The Virus and the Vaccine raises major questions about vaccine policy.

Publishers Weekly

Journalists Bookchin and Schumacher argue that for nine years, from 1954 to 1963, almost every dose of polio vaccine produced in the world-and the 98 million Americans who received polio vaccinations-was contaminated with a cancer-causing virus from the monkey kidneys used to develop the vaccine. Although the polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk virtually ended polio as a threatening disease, the authors detail how "the screening techniques and observation periods that Salk and the vaccine manufacturers employed were not capable of always catching the contaminants." This sordid story spells out how repeated research studies showing that the "SV40" virus was in the vaccine were dismissed by federal health officials, so that "there would be no warning to consumers that the vaccine they and their children were receiving contained a live monkey virus whose effect on humans was entirely unknown." In the second part, the authors contend that even today such organizations as the National Institutes of Health continue to dismiss study results, even though numerous studies have shown that SV40 is capable of causing cancer in humans. The final and most horrific part of the story reports that Lederle Laboratories, the sole oral vaccine supplier in the U.S. from 1977 onward, continued to use monkey kidneys possibly infected by the SV40 virus in its manufacturing process until oral polio vaccine was removed from the market as late as January 2000. This meticulously researched, levelheaded and well-written book should stir up considerable debate. Because the authors never become alarmist, this solid work of investigative reporting carries considerable weight, and deserves to be read by a large audience. Agent, David Black. (Apr.) The African American Child or Beat the Bloat

The African American Child: Development and Challenges

Author: James A Graham PhD

This book introduces social science students (developmental psychology, social work, sociology, Black World Studies) and other related disciplines (family sciences, education and nursing) to African-American child development. The authors provide: A discussion of the issues that impact the lives of African-American children that typically is not discussed in child development textbooks or is relegated to a paragraph in most developmental textbooks; a balanced discussion of the challenges that impact the lives of African-American children as well as emphasize their strengths and their resiliency; a sampling of research that moves beyond a deficit view of the development of African-American children and takes into account the historical, cultural and social factors that influence developmental outcomes for African-American children is included; critical thinking in social science students about future directions for research on African-American children and their families.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer:Gary B Kaniuk, Psy.D.(Cermak Health Services)
Description:This book describes issues that affect African American children, including historical, cultural, and social factors. The authors discuss both the difficulties faced by children of color and how they overcome them.
Purpose:The authors had four goals: "First, we wanted to introduce students to issues that impact the lives of African American children that typically are not discussed in child development textbooks or are relegated to a paragraph in most developmental textbooks. Second, we wanted to present a balanced discussion of the challenges that impact the lives of African American children as well as emphasize their strengths and their resiliency. Third, we wanted to familiarize students with a sampling of research that moves beyond a deficit view of the development of African American children and takes into account the historical, cultural, and social factors that influence developmental outcomes for African American children. Fourth and perhaps most importantly, we wanted to stimulate critical thinking in social science students about future directions for research on African American children and their families."
Audience:Their audience includes "social science students (developmental psychology, social work, sociology, Black World Studies) and other related disciplines (family sciences, education, and nursing) to African American child development." Dr. Harris, associate professor of psychology at Miami University of Ohio, has researched the environmental contributions to preschool and school age cognitive development for the last 17years. Dr. Graham, associate professor of psychology at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), is interested in the social-cognitive aspects of children's relationships.
Features:The book covers issues such as demographics, health issues, mental health issues and racial identity, and moral development. Each chapter begins with an overview, continues with a personal story or a personal viewpoint about the topic, and concludes with a discussion of current perspectives on African American child development and additional readings. Figures and tables are wonderfully instructive and many chapters include boxes that highlight critical information.
Assessment:This excellent book presents important topics, whetting the appetite to learn more. The authors address issues that readers may not want to hear but need to acknowledge in order to understand and intervene in an intelligent manner. This material will challenge beliefs and, hopefully, motivate readers to do something, both in terms of intervention and future research The book should be required reading for individuals working with African American children and their families (and students who will be).

How to Stay Sober: Recovery Without Religion

Author: James Christopher

Until now, virtually all therapy for alcoholics and other chemical-dependent individuals has been religious in nature. Traditional support groups imply that recovery is simply not possible without reliance on a supernatural "Higher Power" or "God as you understand Him." But the need for a secular alternative has been answered. How to Stay Sober: Recovery without Religion can help nonreligious alcoholics maintain philosophical integrity while achieving sobriety. There is no need to pay lip service to religious rituals and beliefs implied or directly stated by traditional support groups.

James Christopher, a longtime sober alcoholic, offers new insights and suggestions for developing coping skills and regaining self-esteem through self-reliance. He notes that current research indicates that there is no such thing as an "alcoholic personality" -- that addiction is the result of physiology, not psychology. It is only by making sobriety the number-one priority in life, Christopher states, that an alcoholic can achieve recovery.

This book is unique in that it offers concrete guidelines for organizing grass-roots secular sobriety groups. It also provides an important weekly diary for the alcoholic to use in that crucial first year of sobriety.

Gerald A Larue, professor emeritus of archaeology and biblical studies at the University of Southern California, states in his introduction: "There is within each of us an instinctual drive to live. We want to live well, to be in control of our lives... Because we are social creatures, we want others to live and live well too... Responsible sobriety, under personal control, is the key." Sobriety must be prioritized daily, no matter what, to remain under personal control. It is only through this conscious choice, Christopher states, that an alcoholic can get back on track and begin anew the creative learning process of life.

We can achieve spiritual awareness and feel what it's like to be alive and healthy. Working Out, Working Within offers readers techniques and suggestions to avoid fixating on winning the game, scoring the goal, or building the perfect body. Our workouts become tools for personal transcendence as we get to know ourselves, test our limits, gather inner strength, and build physical vitality. We can learn how to find harmony between body, mind, and spirit using breath watching, a simple Tao technique to encourage calming and an awareness of our bodies, and to discover our "Tao minds"; visual recording, through which we imagine our bodies in motion, employing all of the senses in our visualization; affirmation reciting, a way to confirm our thoughts by repeating them aloud; and valuable ancient Tao wisdom and strategies to synchronize body and soul. Chungliang Al Huang is the founder and president of the Living Tao Foundation and director of the Lan Ting Institute in China.

This latest book is aimed at athletes at every level, from the recreational beginner to the seasoned competitor. Applying the principles of Taoism to physical training, the authors emphasize that the greatest reward of sport is the inner process itself and that external results such as winning or gaining recognition are mere by-products that come from ha0ving met the spiritual challenge. By watching the breath, carefully visualizing outcomes, repeating affirmations, and vigilantly applying insights learned through these techniques, physical training becomes a spiritual journey of joy and discovery.
